Is it wrong that I allow my 6 y/o boy to wear green hair gel?

I'm a single mom, my son sees his dad 2 weekends a month. His dad has given my son certain rules that he must follow when under his care. He can't wear green hair gel, have a mohawk, can't have long hair, wear pants without a belt, wear washable tattoos, etc. When he saw his green hair he totally over-reacted by saying, "J wants weed, so I'm gonna get him some, ok." I wanna let my son do certain things or wear whatever he wants to as long as he's not hurting himself or others. I can't talk to J's dad, bcuz he's right and I'm wrong. I write to him to prevent arguments and not have to hear him say, "this is what J is allowed to do and nothing else." At the same time, I don't want my son to disobey his dad. Any advice or suggestions, please help!

Your son needs to express himself. Its not like green hair gel is bad. You are right, it's not hurting anyone, and if he doesnt learn to express himself, he'll grow up keeping his emotions and feelings to himself. Now is the perfect time to let your son express his creativity. As for your husband: I understand there are rules to abide for but he's not letting your six-year old boy BE a six-year old boy. I mean every little kid LOVES washable tattoos and want to try different colorful products (even if it IS green hair gel). He needs to let loose a little and let the kid be a kid. I'm sure your not corrupting him by letting him express his artistic side and wear green hair gel.

No its not wrong and I agree with you on letting kids do certain things. The more strict you are with kids the more likely they are to rebel and that is what your son will end up doing to his dad. YOu need to tell his dad in his house its his rules in your house its your rules. Your son is old enough to understand the differences.

ITS NOT WRONG BUT AT 6Y/O YOU SHOULD BE TELLING HIM WHAT YOU WANT HIM TO DO. HE IS NOT IN ANY WAY OLD ENOUGH TO SAY WHAT COLOR HE WANTS HIS HAIR, OR IF HE CAN HAVE ANY HAIR AT ALL.I MEAN WHO IS THE PARENT?

i personally think that you are in the right on this one. it's not like you let him dye his hair permanently green, it will wash out. it sounds like your son's father has issues with your personal style and is taking it out on your kid.

I think you are in the right here. Like was previously said, too many rules will turn your kid into a rebel. Let him do what he wants, just be reasonable and do what is in your best judgment.

Heck, no it's not wrong. I'm a very conservative sort, comparatively, but when my son was 6 (he's now 17), I bleached his hair starting that summer and every summer thereafter til the trend died out. Hair gel is MUCH more temporary than that. It washes out. Your X just wants to be judgmental. Let the kid have fun... he will have a memory to look back on when he is old and SMILE. :-)

I think you are totally in the right. There is nothing wrong with letting kids express themselves and have some individuality now and then. And honestly thier hair is the most dramatic that they can get and honestly it is just hair.

My oldest 2 kids are big on that my oldest dyes the tip so his red he is a blonde and then my other son who has almost white blonde hair likes to dye his black. He is 9 now and we have been doing it off and on for a year.

Now my 7 year old daughter likes pink streaks in hers that we put in with temporary dye and my almsot 6 year old son he likes his with the same stuff i use on the 7 yo but he likes his green and spikes.

I have no issue with anything that is not going to physically harm them .
